Established in 1993, the Rutgers Capoeira Club is one of the first collegiate capoeira clubs run by students in the Northeast. Instructed by Mestre Cigano and Professor Maranhão, the club is part of Grupo Liberdade de Capoeira, that brings this beautiful and poetic martial art to its traditional Afro-Brazilian roots. Here at our club we practice a contemporary style of capoeira, inclusive of both angola and regional styles, while getting exposed to Brazilian culture through other dances such as Samba and Maculele.

The club has grown to become one of the most favored clubs in Rutgers University. Many organizations within the university ask us to do demos and shows for their cultural events. If your organization is interested in a demo please click here.

Annual Jiu Jitsu picnic at Johnson Park. If you make a left onto River Rd from Rt. 27 after crossing the bridge into Highland Park, the park is on your Left on River Road. There'll be mats out by the tennis courts. We have gone to their picnic a few times already, and it's a lot of fun to share your techniques with each other.
