Established in 1993, the Rutgers Capoeira Club is one of the first collegiate capoeira clubs run by students in the Northeast. Instructed by Professor Maranhão, the club is part of Grupo Liberdade de Capoeira led by Mestre Cigano, bringing us this beautiful and poetic martial art from its traditional Afro-Brazilian roots. At our club, we practice a contemporary style of capoeira, inclusive of both "Angola" and "Regional" styles, and immerses in Brazilian culture through traditional songs as well as dances such as Samba de Roda and Maculele.
Important: Practices at Rutgers facilities are for Rutgers students only. Outside visitors must contact us at least 24 hours ahead of time. Non-Rutgers students may attend the classes not affiliated with the University.
